Pharmacy Voices in Healthcare Reform – (Webinar 2) Rethinking Medicines for an Ageing Malaysia

Malaysia is transitioning towards an ageing society, and with this demographic shift comes a rising prevalence of chronic disease and multimorbidity that has steadily increased the medication burden carried by older adults. Increasingly complex medication regimens raise difficult questions about how to balance appropriate treatment against the risks of polypharmacy, medication-related harm, and unnecessary medicine use, and these questions extend well beyond the individual prescribing decision.

Rethinking Medicines for an Ageing Malaysia: Policy Perspectives on Deprescribing and Sustainable Medication Use is the second instalment of Pharmacy Voices in Healthcare Reform, a three-part webinar series organised by the MPS Young Pharmacists Chapter (MPS-YPC) Pharmacy Policy, Innovation and Economics (PPIE) Focus Group. Held online via Zoom on 3rd October 2026 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm, the session comprises a 35-minute presentation by a subject-matter expert followed by a 20-minute question-and-answer discussion.

The webinar positions deprescribing not merely as a clinical intervention but as a policy instrument, examining the current evidence base, the implications for healthcare system sustainability and financing, and the frameworks required to embed safe and appropriate medication use into routine practice. Participants will also consider the evolving role of pharmacists in leading deprescribing initiatives and contributing to health policy development in Malaysia. The session is designed for pharmacy students, Provisionally Registered Pharmacists (PRPs), Fully Registered Pharmacists (FRPs), and early-career pharmacists across all sectors of practice, and no prior background in health policy is assumed. Paid participants will receive a certificate of attendance, CPD points, a written summary of the event, and exclusive access to the PPIE health policy interest community.
