1 in 4 people worldwide are dying from conditions caused by thrombosis. Thrombosis is the underlying pathology of heart attack, thromboembolic stroke, and venous thromboembolism (VTE), the top three cardiovascular killers and importantly is often preventable. Prioritising VTE prevention is essential to the global NCD aim of reducing death due to NCD.

This year MPS-YPC decided to explore the theme of ‘Updates in Treatment Optimization of Thrombosis’. We hope to instil the confidence in pharmacists in playing a role in optimizing pharmacotherapy for management and prevention of thrombosis. To be delivered by outstanding figures with vast in-depth knowledge of clinical pharmacotherapy, the talks are intended to be both informative and thought-provoking for our participants.

Words from Tan Run Shi, Chairperson of MCPS 2021

Riding the momentum gained from the last session of MCPS 4.0, this year MCPS 5.0 would like to focus on therapeutic area in cardiology specializing on treatment optimization in thrombosis disease. Cardiovascular diseases are the number 1 cause of death globally, taking an estimated 17.9 millions lives each year. The use of NOACs with dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) presents a therapeutic dilemma. There is uncertainty over the optimal antithrombotic management strategy for patients with AF presenting with an acute coronary syndrome or undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)/stenting.

We aim to empower young pharmacists with the knowledge, skills and confidence to translate evidence-based medicine (EBM) into day-to-day clinical practice. In this year MCPS 5.0, the webinar topics will be revolving around the importance of ischemic and bleeding risk stratification for DAPT type and duration selection, to learn on how DAPT type and duration can be selected in clinical practice, the types of NOAC used in treatment of VTE and the management of pulmonary embolism in Covid-19 patient.

Due to the unforeseen circumstances (Covid pandemic), MCPS 5.0 will take on virtual stage this year.  Different from last year webinar, we have also included a virtual workshop that involves engaging discussions between participants and our cardiology pharmacists.  MCPS 5.0 will be held tentatively on 6^th November and 13^th November 2021 respectively.
